Jettas manufactured in 1996 through today include an on-board diagnostic computer to monitor engine & emissions performance. You can read a trouble code from this computer by connecting a scanner to an interface plug.
Plug the OBD-II scanner in to the Diagnostic Link Connector port with the ignition off. This is a 16-pin plug about 2-inches long by 3/4-inches high; on the 1999 VW Jetta, it is located underneath the dashboard near where the driver's left knee would be. The plug itself is usually purple.
Plug the pinned connector from the scan device in to the open port next to the fuse panel.
Vehicles in compliance with the OBD-II standard have interface Knowledge Link Connector plugs. The location of the DLC -- "check engine plug" -- varies. In plenty of vehicles, it is beneath the dashboard on the driver's side, within a foot of the middle of the vehicle.
Plug the electrical connector from the device in to the fuse panel.
